She’s part of the private client team, with considerable experience advising clients on succession planning, estate administration, powers of attorney and residential property. Suzie’s well known for her ability to clearly communicate often complicated legal concepts, so clients can make informed choices for themselves and their loved ones.
But the proud mum of two (three if you count her beloved black lab, Halle) has more than one string to her bow.
In the latest in our team profiles, we caught up with her to find out more.
What’s your background?
Growing up on a farm exposed me to the world of work from an early age. I’d spend school holidays berry picking and packing as well as tattie picking, dressing and roguing (weeding out unwanted plants). It was hard work, but I like to think it instilled in me a strong work ethic.
What about your academic background?
I loved my four years at the University of Aberdeen studying law, and I took full advantage of the student theatre and charities groups. I then took a bit of a detour to follow my dream of becoming an opera singer and completed a two-year masters degree in classical singing at the then Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
However, making a living from singing is incredibly precarious, competitive and nomadic, so I moved back into law (after a few years as an independent financial advisor). My financial services qualifications and experience were particularly relevant to private client work and this seemed the natural choice of legal discipline.
What’s your proudest career moment?
I was personally thanked in the eulogy at an elderly client’s funeral. It was entirely unexpected, but I was touched to know the personal care and attention had made such an impression.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself
I sing in a band with two neurosurgeons and two neurologists called ‘The Nutcrackers’. We do covers of everything from Dolly Parton and the Beatles to Adele and Franz Ferdinand. It’s a far cry from opera singing, but great fun!
What’s the best advice you’ve received?
Better to regret the things you’ve done, than the things you haven’t. It’s a good mantra to help push you beyond your comfort zone and give things a go.
