Meet family law solicitor Holly Allan-Hardisty

In our latest profile, we caught up with Holly Allan-Hardisty, whose non-traditional journey into law led her to discover a passion for family law and a drive to make a difference.

Tell us about your background

I didn’t take the traditional route into law. I first studied economics and computer science at St Andrews University, but it became clear I was more interested in the legal aspects of these fields than the career paths they offered.

That inspired me to move to Aberdeen, where I completed the accelerated LLB and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at Robert Gordon University.

After finishing my diploma, I worked as an assistant reporter at the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration. That’s where I found my passion for family law, as I saw how I could use my skills to help people through challenging times.

What about your hobbies?

With two young children, free time can feel like a luxury, but I love travelling and exploring new cuisines — I’d call myself something of a foodie.

One of my most memorable dining experiences was at Le Jules Verne, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant perched high in the Eiffel Tower. The combination of exceptional food and stunning views was unforgettable.

What’s been your proudest career moment?

Being offered a traineeship with Ledingham Chalmers is my proudest career moment so far.

I became a first-time mum while studying for my legal diploma and was on maternity leave during the lockdown, which was a challenging period. Receiving the traineeship felt like recognition of all my hard work. It also showed me that I could balance my family life and achieve my career goals.

Why family law?

Family law stood out to me because of the human connection.

Every day, I work with people who are facing some of the most difficult moments in their lives. It’s a privilege to be trusted with their stories and to help them find a way forward. Knowing that my work makes a real difference is incredibly rewarding.

Tell us something surprising about yourself

Rain seems to follow me wherever I go! I even brought rain to the Sahara Desert, which hadn’t seen a drop in over five years until I arrived. So, if you hear about unexpected rain somewhere, there’s a good chance I was just there!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

My mum always told me that hard work and determination would pay off.

That advice has stuck with me, and when I became a notary public, I chose the motto Out of determination comes victory.” It’s a daily reminder of the value of perseverance.
