A day in the life of a sales negotiator — meet Katie Brown

Katie works in our Aberdeen estate agency office where we're looking for another sales negotiator to join the team.

We caught up with Katie — a University of Aberdeen sociology graduate — to find out more about her role and why she’d encourage people to apply.

Tell us about your background and how you came to LCEA

I began my career at Aberdeen City Council before venturing into property rentals, working with various estate agencies.

This eventually led me to LCEA, where I’ve worked for almost three years, with over a year in my current role.

I owe a lot to my rental experiences; they equipped me with the ability to multitask and effectively communicate in diverse situations.

Being the primary point of contact for clients, one of the most fulfilling aspects of my job is letting people know when someone’s made an offer on their property. It's often a significant moment — and a relief — for clients.

Managing a portfolio of properties keeps me busy, and makes every day different and exciting, even when the process remains the same.

I’ve found LCEA to be a welcoming environment where you’re supported, all the solicitors are very approachable, and there is a no-blame culture. Work-life balance is prioritised too.

What about your hobbies or any memorable life experiences?

Outside of work, I stay active with yoga and running, and I love spending quality time with my family.

In 2010, I volunteered with the American Conservation Experience for three months, working on national parks like the Grand Canyon. We worked in planting, trail building, and maintenance while camping with minimal facilities. It was great to push myself out of my comfort zone, experience something new, and meet a lot of interesting people.

A glimpse into my work day

Here's a snapshot of my typical day —

  • Engaging with clients via phone and email to discuss their property's status, market interest, and broader market trends

  • Handling offers and presenting them to clients

  • Overseeing a portfolio of properties, ensuring each client receives personalised attention

  • Providing biweekly updates on market interest and viewing feedback, offering reassurance and answering any questions clients have to keep them up to date about the process. It’s important clients know we’re here to support them during what is one of life’s milestones, even if they’ve bought and sold many times before

  • Advising clients on strategies to enhance property appeal, such as pricing adjustments or social media advertising, as well as services such as 360 tours and drone images

What are the main skills that help you in the role?

Here are some essential skills that have been instrumental to me in the role —

  • People skills — building and maintaining relationships, understanding and empathising with clients, many of whom can find the process stressful — a key thing for me is always thinking about what I'd want to know if I were in the client's shoes

  • Proactivity — keeping clients informed with routine updates, including notes of interest and viewing feedback, to manage expectations

  • Positive outlook — maintaining a positive attitude, even when the market is tough, and focusing on constructive actions

  • Effective communication — striking a balance between email and phone communication is important; emails offer a written record and flexibility, but phone calls also go a long way in providing a personal touch and resolving any issues. It’s also about understanding how clients want you to communicate with them

"Rest assured, you'll have a supportive team of colleagues here, including experienced sales negotiators like me, to assist you every step of the way. " Katie Brown, sales negotiator
